Shooting foreground objects in front of a brightly lit bluescreen or greenscreen has revolutionised the world of filmmaking and special effects. Originally the preserve of motion picture film production, this technique has now extended into video production and digital imaging.
However, when shooting in blue or green screen a number of issues affect the image, which usually have to be solved in post production or by the use of expensive keying systems, or both. These include fringing (a glow created around backlit objects), and spill (the background colour of the object reflecting onto the image, giving a tinge of screen colour around the edges). Both spill and fringing are more problematical when using objects of a highly reflective nature such as metal. The post production process to remove these can be very expensive. Also, in live situations such as news and weather reporting, the problems cannot usually be completely resolved with the low end keying systems used in most studios.
To counter these problems Formatt has designed ProComp. ProComp is specifically designed to remove fringing and spill as well as improving images with transparencies, and reducing the disjointing caused when objects move (motion blur).
ProComp also vastly improves mattes by improving the density of screen colour.
